Characterizing Mechanical Properties of NiTi used in Cardiovascular Devices

October meeting of MN Chapter of ASM International

Presented by Dr. Shivram Sridhar

Principal Scientist – Global Technology and Innovation at Medtronic
710 Medtronic Parkway, Mailstop LT220 | Fridley, MN 55432 | USA
Office 763.505.1113

Abstract

This seminar examines the mechanical behavior of Nitinol (NiTi) in cardiovascular devices, with
emphasis on the phase transformations that enable superelasticity and large recoverable
strains. It considers the demands of catheter crimping, deployment, and repeated physiological
loading, and the need for reliable methods to predict device stresses, strains, and fatigue
performance. The presentation explores experimental characterization methods, including
mechanical testing, differential scanning calorimetry, and optical and scanning electron
microscopy–based digital image correlation to measure local deformation. It discusses how
these measurements support finite element model calibration and validation, capturing
temperature-dependent behavior, tension–compression asymmetry, and strain localization, with
applications to cyclic loading of stent structures. Finally, the seminar examines how
thermomechanical processing shapes crystallographic texture and compares micromechanical
modeling approaches to explain its influence on Nitinol’s stress–strain response.

About the Speaker

Dr. Shivram Kashyap Sridhar is a Principal Scientist in Global Technology & Innovation at
Medtronic, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He earned his Bachelor of Technology in
Metallurgy and Materials Engineering from IIT Madras, India and his Ph.D. in Materials Science
and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. His work focuses on understanding how
materials microstructure influences performance, employing mechanical testing, microscopy,
and finite element analysis to solve challenges ranging from fundamental materials research to
medical device failure analysis and next generation device design. He will share insights into
the mechanical behavior of Nitinol (Nickel Titanium shape memory alloys) used in
cardiovascular devices.

MN ASM September MN-DOT Tour & Talk

1400 Gervais Avenue; Maplewood, MN 55109

2:00-3:00PM Lab Tour

3:00-3:30PM Snowplow Tour

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Materials Laboratory tests standard practices, aggregate, sand, soil, cement, concrete products, curing materials, metallic materials, joint materials, bearing pads, electrical cable, geotextiles, clay pipe, drain tile, pavement marking tapes, glass beads, bituminous mix designs, field testing equipment calibration, rock salt, and alternative winter chemicals. We provide timely specialized expertise, testing, leadership, guidance, and direction in geotechnical materials, pavement, and research engineering to improve performance and cost effectiveness. We also provide tools to practice the most efficient pavement designs, maintenance, and construction procedures, and provide technical training to our transportation partners. In addition to the many labs the facility hosts equipment and vehicles used to perform field testing as well as the newly added Technical Certification Center (TCC). The TCC is a facility used by the Technical Certification Program (TCP) to train and certify people who test and inspect the materials used on Minnesota roadways and bridges.

About the Tour Leader

Materials Testing Manager, Ron Mulvaney, loves guiding Materials Lab tours! He worked his way through Civil Engineering school and began working in the private sector. Then, he found MnDOT. His favorite days are when weather and work allow the Materials Lab team to grill in the courtyard for lunch. He can talk about experience during the tumultuous time after the 35W bridge collapse and how other cities and states have reached out after similar tragedies. Ron is thoughtful, fun, and funny.
